Selection criteria responses are required for most APS and state government roles in Australia. They're often the most time-consuming part of a government job application — and the part most applicants get wrong.
How to Structure a Selection Criteria Response
Use the STAR method: Situation → Task → Action → Result. Each response should be 200–400 words. Some agencies ask for 250 words maximum — always check and comply with the word count.
Example: 'Achieves Results' (APS 5–6 Level)
Criterion: Demonstrate your ability to achieve results in a complex environment.
Example response: 'In my role as Policy Officer at the Department of Infrastructure, I was tasked with delivering a regulatory impact assessment within a compressed 6-week timeframe following a machinery of government change. I coordinated input from 11 internal stakeholders and 3 external agencies, developed a project tracking system to manage competing deadlines, and led two rounds of consultation with industry peak bodies. The final RIS was delivered on time, accepted by the Secretary's office without revision, and informed a Cabinet submission that passed in the following Budget cycle. This outcome strengthened the division's reputation for high-quality policy work under pressure.'
Example: 'Communicates With Influence' (EL 1 Level)
Example response: 'As Acting Director during a period of significant program restructure, I was responsible for communicating changes to a team of 14 officers and managing the expectations of 3 ministerial offices simultaneously. I developed a structured communication plan, held weekly all-hands briefings, and produced a plain-language FAQ document that reduced inbound queries to the executive by 60%. When a key stakeholder escalated concerns directly to the Deputy Secretary, I prepared a targeted briefing that addressed their concerns and was subsequently used as the template for all future stakeholder communications on the program.'
Common Selection Criteria Mistakes
- Using 'we' instead of 'I' — selection criteria assess YOUR contribution, not your team's
- Not including a measurable result — every STAR needs an outcome with a number
- Writing an essay — 200–400 words maximum. Stay within limits.
- Generic responses — selection panels read hundreds. Specific situations stand out.
- Ignoring the word count — if they say 250 words, 400 words will work against you
