Nursing interviews mix standard behavioural questions with clinical-scenario ones that test judgement under pressure. Here's how to prepare for both, with real example answers.

Common Nursing Interview Questions

These come up across most nursing interviews, regardless of specialty:

• "Tell me about a time you had to advocate for a patient."
• "Describe a situation where you disagreed with a colleague's clinical decision. What did you do?"
• "How do you prioritise care when you have multiple patients with competing needs?"
• "Tell me about a time you made a mistake. How did you handle it?"
• "How do you stay current with clinical best practice?"

Worked Example: Prioritising Competing Patient Needs

"On a busy medical-surgical shift, I had one patient reporting new chest pain and another due for a scheduled medication with a narrow administration window. I escalated the chest pain immediately to the on-call doctor and asked a colleague to cover the medication round for that one patient while I assessed, which kept both patients safe without delaying either. Afterwards, I documented the timeline clearly for handover so nothing got lost in the shift change."

Clinical Scenario Questions

Unlike behavioural questions, these test how you'd handle a hypothetical situation in real time, not a past experience. Interviewers are assessing your clinical reasoning process as much as the final answer.

• Talk through your reasoning out loud, don't just give a final answer.
• Reference your facility's actual protocols and escalation pathways where relevant, rather than a generic answer.
• It's fine to say what you'd check or ask before deciding, real clinical judgement includes knowing what you don't yet know.

Questions to Ask Your Interviewer
